Louis van Gaal has called for patience from Manchester United fans as Memphis Depay adapts to life in the Premier League following his transfer to Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

The Netherlands international has failed to live up to expectations since his big-money move to the Premier League outfit back in May.

The 21-year-old has only managed to score one Premier League goals in eight appearances in the top flight for Van Gaal’s men this season and did not feature during the goalless draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Depay was left out of the latest Netherlands squad on Monday following his stuttering start to his career at Old Trafford.

However, United boss Van Gaal insists that he is not concerned about Depay’s inconsistent form and says that the winger must be given enough time to adapt to life at the club.

Van Gaal told a news conference on Monday: “I have said he is the greatest talent of his age but he is only 21 and you cannot expect consistency.

“He is at a stage of his career where he must adapt to many things. I’m convinced he’s coming back maybe stronger than before but we have to give him time, like we will with Anthony Martial when he is a little bit lower in his shape.”
