Man United defender demolishes rivals to win player of the month
Chris Smalling wins Manchester United's player of the month award for October with almost three-quarters of the vote
Chris Smalling was the clear winner of Manchester United’s player of the month award for October, beating off competition from Marcos Rojo and Anthony Martial with 72 per cent of the vote.
The England international was voted as United’s best performer during October as he netted the award for the first time since joining the club from Fulham.
Smalling has so far made more appearances (19) than any other United player this season and the club’s official website described the defender as “arguably been our most influential performer”.
Smalling, who notched up an assist during the 3-0 win at Everton, captained Louis van Gaal’s side in the absence of Wayne Rooney and finished second and third in the voting for United’s monthly awards in August and September.
Speaking to United’s website upon receiving the prize, Smalling said: “It’s a massive achievement and one that I’m very proud of, that the fans have recognised the work that goes in on the pitch. I’m happy that I’m the player that’s been chosen this month.”
Smalling will be expecting to feature when United return to Premier League action with a home clash against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
