Man United legend: Memphis Depay is not ready make the difference yet

Ruud van Nistelrooy says that it will take time for Memphis Depay to adapt to life at Manchester United

Ruud van Nistelrooy says that Memphis Depay will need some more time to adapt to life at Manchester United if he is to follow in the footsteps of some of the Red Devils’ most famous number sevens.

The Dutch winger has endured a mixed start to the season after arriving at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven back in the summer transfer window.

Depay has found himself on the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks after failing to produce consistent performances for Louis van Gaal’s men.

However, the 21-year-old marked his return to the starting line-up by scoring United’s opener in their 2-1 win over Watford at the weekend.

Van Nistelrooy was asked about Depay and whether he could be set to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham during a question-and-answer session at the Oxford Union on Tuesday night.

And the former striker replied: “Memphis has the quality and ability to do that but I understand your question at this moment in time.

“To make a difference at United, it means being really brilliant and being decisive in big games. He is not yet ready for that quite yet.”
