Man United legend: Why critics of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil are so wrong

Rio Ferdinand says Mesut Ozil's statistics at Arsenal speak for themselves

Rio Ferdinand has launched a staunch defence of Mesut Ozil, claiming that the Arsenal star is one of the best players in the Premier League.

Ozil has received plenty of criticism for failing to live up to his big-money price tag since arriving at Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

The World Cup winner has often been accused of failing to perform in the games against the top teams and for displaying too much of a relaxed approach during games.

However, former United defender Ferdinand insists that Ozil deserves much more credit, with the Germany international already having notched up nine assists in the Premier League this season.

Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “People talk about Ozil saying he has a languid style that he looks too relaxed that he isn’t trying but this guy’s stats…

“He has the second most chances created in the Premier League since he came here.

“He has the most assists… this guy he is a creator, he sets up chances and loves others to make the runs and they know if they make moves he will set them up.

“He is a fantastic player.”

Ozil will be expecting to feature when Arsenal return to Premier League action with a home clash against local derby rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners are currently second in the table and level on points with leaders Manchester City.
