Man United star sends message to struggling Chelsea rival

Wayne Rooney says it won't be long until Diego Costa starts scoring regularly for Chelsea again this season

Wayne Rooney is fully backing Diego Costa to rediscover his scoring touch in the coming weeks and months following his stuttering start to the season with Chelsea.

The Spain international has failed to recreate his prolific form from last season and has so far only managed to net three times this term despite making 17 appearances in all competitions.

However, Manchester United captain Rooney rated Costa as Chelsea’s best player last season as Jose Mourinho’s men won the league title at a canter.

And Rooney feels that it won’t be long until Costa starts firing for Chelsea on a regular basis again this season.

Rooney, 30, told a news conference on Thursday: “I actually voted for Costa as player of the year last season because I thought he was a huge player for Chelsea.

“I strongly believe that’s why they became champions.

“Obviously it hasn’t gone as well for him as it did last season but I think he is a fantastic player.

“He’s a fighter. That’s part of his game and it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to ask him not to do that. I feel that’s in him – that fight.

Chelsea return to Premier League action with a home clash against Norwich City after the international break.

United, meanwhile, travel to Watford on Saturday 21 November as they look to climb the table and sustain a Premier League title challenge.
