Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have formed an impressive Tottenham Hotspur partnership, according to former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

The Belgium international linked up with his compatriot and former Ajax captain Vertonghen after he moved to the north London side in an £11.5m deal from Atletico Madrid.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen have helped Spurs remain unbeaten since the opening day of the Premier League season and only Arsenal and Manchester United have conceded less goals.

Former Arsenal and England centre-half Keown believes Tottenham completed an excellent piece of business after Mauricio Pochettino managed to lure Aldwerweireld to Spurs ahead of former club Southampton.

Keown told Daily Mail: “Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have been very impressive and formed a real partnership together.”

Aldwereireld will get his first taste of a north London derby on Sunday as Tottenham make the trip to Emirates Stadium.

The Belgian defender built a reputation as a solid Premier League centre-half during last season’s loan spell at Southampton.
