Martin Skrtel says Liverpool’s 4-1 win at Manchester City can provide the Reds with a springboard to launch a top-four challenge.

The Reds eased into a seventh-minute lead after Eliaquim Mangala put the ball past his own goalkeeper Joe Hart at Etihad Stadium.

We know what we play for, we know our targets, and we’ll try to do our best to achieve them

Liverpool doubled their lead thanks to Philippe Coutinho’s fourth goal in three games before Roberto Firmino added a third in the 32nd minute.

Although Sergio Aguero offered City some hope with a goal before half-time, Liverpool sealed three points thanks to Skrtel’s late volley.

The Slovakia international explained why Liverpool’s win at Etihad Stadium is so important ahead of the hectic festive period.

“The table is tight and the Christmas period is always very important for every single team and it’s going to be the same for us,” Skrtel told Liverpool’s website.

“The win that we got today is very good for our confidence going into the next games.

“We’re just going from game to game and trying to get as many points as we can.

“We know what we play for, we know our targets, and we’ll try to do our best to achieve them.”

Liverpool are six points behind fourth-placed Arsenal after the Gunners suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat by West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns earlier on Saturday.
