Memphis Depay has revealed that he was shocked when he first learned that he had put on five kilograms since his transfer to Manchester United in the summer.

The 21-year-old winger has failed to produce consistent performances for Louis van Gaal’s men and was an unused substitute as United beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 on Saturday.

It recently emerged that Depay has put on around five kilos of muscle mass since arriving at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven.

And the Netherlands international has revealed his surprise at the amount of weight he has gained following his move to the Premier League.

Winger Depay is quoted as saying by Sky Sports: “When I stood on the scales first I thought, ‘OK, is this correct?’

“My body is still developing. Now I’m a little heavier. I work a lot on my co-ordination and starting speed.

“Since I joined Manchester United, I’ve gained five kilos.

“And that’s not fat. Only muscle mass. It’s pretty bizarre. It’s also due to the heavy rhythm in England. I now weigh 85 kilos.”

Depay has made a total of 14 appearances in all competitions for Van Gaal’s side so far this season.

He will be hoping to feature when the Red Devils take on Watford in the Premier League on 21 November after the international break.
