Per Mertesacker is backing Mesut Ozil to have an “enormous” impact on Arsenal’s season after the playmaker notched up another assist in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Harry Kane gave Arsenal’s bitter local rivals the lead at Emirates Stadium with a cool finish in the 32nd minute.

But Arsene Wenger’s men battled hard and Kieran Gibbs came off the bench to bundle home Ozil’s pinpoint cross to net an equaliser for the home side.

Ozil, who set a new Premier League record of notching up assists in six consecutive top-flight games, set up a number of other chances for his team-mates, but they were unable to convert.

And Mertesacker feels that Ozil can play a major part if Arsenal are going to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Mertesacker told Arsenal’s website: “It could have been more [assists for Ozil] after today. He gave a lot of good set-pieces and we had a couple of great chances.

“If we continue to play like that and fight like that, he can have an enormous impact on our season.”
