Mesut Ozil reveals new nickname for Arsenal team-mate
Mesut Ozil and his Arsenal team-mates have come up with a new nickname for Francis Coquelin...
Mesut Ozil has revealed that he and his Arsenal team-mates have begun calling Francis Coquelin “the pitbull” following his sparkling performances in defensive midfield for the Gunners.
Coquelin has made the holding midfield role his own in recent months after being drafted into Arsene Wenger’s first team last season.
The French midfielder will be expecting to feature when Arsenal host Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby clash at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
And Ozil has lifted the lid on how he and his team-mates have been thoroughly impressed by Coquelin’s rise to prominence at the north London club.
Ozil told Arsenal Player: “I know that Santi is a very technically-gifted player, just as Francis is. We call Francis ‘the pitbull’ because he’s very aggressive and always gives 100 per cent.
“I’m pleased to be able to have those players behind me. But you need to praise the whole team.
“We fight for each other and are like a small family. You can sense that on the pitch. It shows that we are hungry for success and that’s why I want to praise the whole team.
“You see in the games that we can change players. Giroud is a different type of player to Walcott or Alexis.
“We have important and good players in attack who are hungry for goals. Those three have scored many goals already this season and you can see that we need them because they always want to score. That’s good for Arsenal.”
The 24-year-old Coquelin has made 10 Premier League appearances for Arsenal so far this season to help Wenger’s men up to second place in the table and level on points with leaders Manchester City.
Arsenal were 3-0 winners at Swansea City in their most recent Premier League outing at the Liberty Stadium last weekend.
