Nigel Winterburn believes Arsenal will launch a sustained Premier League title challenge this season.

The Gunners are level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s north London derby.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six top-flight games since a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in September, winning five of their six outings.

Former Arsenal defender Winterburn, who the top-flight crown three times during his career at Highbury, is confident Arsene Wenger’s side will be top or within a few points of the leaders next spring.

Winterburn told Arsenal’s podcast: “I’ve always said with the Arsenal squad, the way that they finished last season.

“This squad have a fantastic chance of challenge for the Premier League. I talk about leading or being within two or three points of the leaders in April. Then you find out if your players can handle the pressure and carry the momentum through until the end of the season.

“Arsenal will be their fighting if they can get their players back.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s side made the stronger start at The Emirates as England international Harry Kane gave the visitors a 32nd-minute lead.

However, Arsenal substitute Kieran Gibbs levelled the north London derby with 13 minutes remaining thanks to a close-range finish.
