Pat Nevin: What Diego Costa needs to do to help Chelsea
Former Chelsea man Pat Nevin says Diego Costa needs to make more runs behind opposition defences
Diego Costa needs to make more runs behind opposition defences to help Chelsea midfielders, according to Pat Nevin.
The Blues slumped to a 1-0 defeat by Stoke City at The Britannia on Saturday evening following Marko Anautovic’s 52nd-minute winner for the Potters.
He has to go beyond the defenders in the box and get to the byline
Costa hasn’t scored in his last six Premier League games which has seen the defending champions lose four of six games during the striker’s dry spell.
Former Chelsea midfielder Nevin has urged Costa to make more runs in behind opposition defences to create more space for the likes of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas and Willian.
“They haven’t got enough players arriving in the box when the ball is being put in there – that includes Diego Costa,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“In fact, it probably applies for Costa more than anyone else. He has to hurt them. He has to go beyond the defenders in the box and get to the byline.
“It doesn’t matter if he doesn’t get the ball but it drags everyone back and allows your midfielders to have more space and get on the ball.
“It is really old, simple stuff.”
Costa has scored two goals and has made one assist in 10 Premier League appearances for the defending champions this season.
The Spain international netted 20 times in 26 Premier League games during Chelsea’s title-winning campaign last term.
Costa moved to Chelsea in a £32m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2014.
