Paul Merson makes bold claim about Man United transfer plans
Paul Merson feels that Manchester United still need to bolster their midfield options with some world-class talent
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United still need to sign a top-quality midfielder if they are to challenge for the Premier League title this season – despite signing two in the summer.
The Red Devils brought in the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger during the summer transfer window as Louis van Gaal bolstered his midfield options ahead of his second season in charge at Old Trafford.
However, former Arsenal star Merson has not been impressed by the Red Devils’ midfield so far this season and feels that United would benefit from the signing of a top-quality star to help pull the strings behind the attack.
Merson wrote in the Daily Star: “They still need a top-quality midfielder in my opinion, especially as Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger won’t be around much longer.
“I still don’t understand why Anthony Martial is playing on the wing either. He set the Premier League alight playing as a centre forward. Now he looks like a fish up a tree.”
United, who were 2-0 winners over West Brom at Old Trafford last weekend, are currently fourth in the Premier League table and just two points behind leaders Manchester City after 12 games of the new campaign.
The Red Devils return to top-flight action with a trip to Watford after the international break on Saturday 21 November.
