Paul Merson: This signing would tick all the boxes for Man United

Paul Merson tells Manchester United to focus their efforts on trying to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid

Paul Merson believes that Manchester United should go all out to sign Gareth Bale – and forget about their reported pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo.

United were linked with a potential bid to sign Bale from Tottenham before his eventual transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.

The Red Devils have also long been linked with a move to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid following the Portugal international’s move to the Bernabeu back in the summer of 2009.

However, former Arsenal man Merson feels that United should focus all of their efforts on trying to sign Bale and forget about the prospect of bringing Ronaldo back to the club.

Merson told the Daily Star: “I’d take Bale over Ronaldo any day. If you’re giving one of them a four-year contract, you’d get far more out of Bale over four years.

“However good he thinks he is, Ronaldo is not going to be scoring 30 goals a season and terrorising defences when he’s 34.

“But it’s not just that. Bale is a team player. He’d fit in under Van Gaal. He works harder and he’s willing to work back for the team.

“He ticks every single box and signing him would be massive for United. I can’t see them winning the league with this team because, although they’re hard to beat, they don’t score enough goals.

“Bale would change that in a heartbeat. Every club needs a star forward these days and he’d be a massive coup.

“He was player of the year playing for Tottenham. Imagine what he could do at United?”

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table and just two points behind leaders Manchester City after 12 games of the new campaign.

The Red Devils return to top-flight action with a trip to Watford after the international break on Saturday 21 November.
