Paul Merson: Why Arsenal can beat Man City to the title

Paul Merson reckons Arsenal have what it takes to win their first Premier League title since 2004 this season

Paul Merson believes that Arsenal have what it takes to fight off competition from Manchester City and win the Premier League title this season.

Arsenal came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s north London derby clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

That result left Arsene Wenger’s men in second place in the table and level on points with leaders City after 12 games.

Former Arsenal man Merson was particularly impressed by the Gunners’ resilience against their bitter local rivals, as they battled back to earn a point despite being outplayed by the visitors for long spells.

And Merson feels that Arsenal will challenge City all of the way this season and is tipping his former employers to have a great chance of lifting the top-flight trophy for the first time since 2004.

Merson told Sky Sports News HQ: “Arsenal may have been bossed by Tottenham but they still didn’t lose the game, which may sound silly but for me it’s an important sign. Those points can make the difference come the end of the season.

“They were losing games like that a couple of seasons ago and, as much as they’ll be disappointed with that performance, they’ve still got a great chance to win the title.”

He added: “I can’t split Manchester City and Arsenal, I really can’t.”

Arsenal travel to West Bromwich Albion after the international break on 21 November.
