Paul Merson: Why Arsenal will thrash derby rivals Tottenham
Former Arsenal man Paul Merson is backing the Gunners to win in convincing style against Tottenham
Paul Merson has backed Arsenal to emphatically beat Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat by Bundesliga holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League at Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
Tottenham, meanwhile, were 2-1 winners against Belgian side Anderlecht in the Europa League thanks to Mousa Dembele’s 87th-minute winner last night.
However, former Arsenal playmaker Merson believes Arsenal will have too much for Mauricio Pochettino’s side after a five-game winning run in the Premier League.
“This is a big game for Tottenham and a big game for Arsenal after the embarrassment against Bayern,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“When you consider the manner in which they lost in Munich, if Arsenal were to lose you could say Arsene Wenger would come under pressure again.
“Saying that, I do expect Arsenal to win, I’d be shocked if they didn’t.”
Arsenal have won their last five Premier League games thanks to victories over Leicester City, Manchester United, Watford, Everton and Swansea City.
Tottenham are unbeaten in 10 Premier League outings since a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening day of the Premier League season.
The Gunners have already beaten Tottenham this season after a 2-1 victory in the League Cup third round at White Hart Lane.
