Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to turn their disastrous start to the season around and finish in the top four – ahead of Manchester United.

The Blues slumped to their seventh top-flight defeat of the season on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

There’s still a long time for Chelsea to make up that gap

Despite the loss to the Potters, Chelsea were widely praised for an improved performance as they came close to snatching an equaliser against Mark Hughes’ men.

The defeat left the west London side languishing in 16th place in the Premier League table and just three points above the relegation zone after 12 games.

United, meanwhile, are fourth in the table and just two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Nevertheless, former Arsenal man Merson feels that Chelsea have what it takes to climb the table rapidly in the coming weeks and months and secure a return to the Champions League for next season.

Merson told Sky Sports News HQ: “It’s a head-or-tales one here for me.

“If Chelsea play like they did against Stoke they’ll win a lot of football matches. I know that sounds silly as they lost but their performance was so much better.

“Meanwhile, Manchester United never looked like scoring against West Brom until Jesse Lingard got them out of trouble with a stunner. You’ve got to go out to win football matches and they go out not to lose them.

“Chelsea have a lot of points to make up but I can see them going on a run while United are capable of drawing too many games.

“There’s still a long time for Chelsea to make up that gap and, while it’s a hard, hard one to call, I fancy Chelsea to just to edge it.”
