Paul Merson: Why Chelsea won’t beat Tottenham on Sunday

Paul Merson is expecting Tottenham's clash with Chelsea on Sunday to end as a scored draw

Paul Merson is tipping Tottenham Hotspur to hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in Sunday’s Premier League showdown at White Hart Lane.

The Blues head to north London looking to build on their recent victories over Norwich City and Maccabi Tel-Aviv and turn around their disastrous start to the Premier League season.

Spurs, meanwhile, take on their London rivals on the back of their 4-1 win over West Ham United at the weekend, a victory which left them fifth in the table and just four points off top spot.

However, former Arsenal star Merson says that it will be difficult to pick between the two sides and is expecting Sunday’s clash to end in a draw.

Merson told Sky Sports: “You have to feel for Tottenham a bit in this game, to have the season they’ve had so far and then when Chelsea come to town, they’ve just got back from Qarabag. It’s a big ask after a six-hour journey.

“Chelsea fell over the line against Norwich and had an easy game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. I’m going for a draw but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if Chelsea went on and won this.

“If Chelsea win this against a Spurs side who have only lost once this season in the league, people will sit up. You would start thinking they can get top four, especially with the way the Premier League has gone this season.”

Chelsea are currently in 15th place in the Premier League table and 10 points behind Spurs heading into Sunday’s game.

The Blues have lost seven of their opening 13 top-flight games to leave their title defence in tatters.
