Arsenal legend Paul Merson gushes with praise for Tottenham star
Paul Merson has been very impressed by Dele Alli for Tottenham this season
Paul Merson believes that Dele Alli has already staked his claim for a place at Euro 2016 after his impressive display for England against France on Tuesday.
The Spurs teenager celebrated a memorable week after capping his full international debut with a stunning goal in the 2-0 win in Tuesday’s friendly at Wembley.
And former Arsenal star Merson feels that the 19-year-old should be given a chance to prove himself on a big stage when England head to France for next summer’s European championships.
Comparing Alli to Frank Lampard, Merson told the Daily Star: “[Against France] Alli was making runs, tackling, scoring.
“You don’t see midfielders who are prepared to make forward runs like that much any more.
“Frank Lampard did it. Alli does it too. He made run and after run. I bet Wayne Rooney loved it. It was the best I’ve seen Rooney play for ages.”
He added: “Roy Hodgson will waste our best chance of success at Euro 2016 if he ignores young players like John Stones, Eric Dier and Alli.”
Alli, who has been one of Tottenham’s top performers this season, will be expecting to feature when Spurs return to top-flight action with a home clash against West Ham United at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.
The teenager was in good form as Spurs secured a 1-1 draw with Arsenal in their most recent top-flight outing before the international break.
