Paul Scholes criticises Man United’s Anthony Martial and calls for January signing

One thing he [Van Gaal] has done well is sort the back-line up. But attacking-wise, they don't look a threat, they don't look like they're going to score goals. "I think maybe he's set up his team to be very good defensively because he knows maybe he hasn't got the quality up front. He's got two young players in Martial and Memphis. Martial for me, has still got a lot to prove goal-scoring wise. He isn't a centre-forward who lives for goals. He likes to come outside the box, he likes to drift to the left wing... he really doesn't look bothered if he misses a chance, he doesn't look bothered if he scores a goal. As a centre-forward, all you live for is scoring goals, all you want to do is score goals and he doesn't look like that type of player to me. Maybe they need to go into the transfer market in January for one of them

Paul Scholes has warned that Anthony Martial still has plenty to prove as a centre-forward at Manchester United in the wake of Wednesday’s goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven.

The teenager has been a regular fixture in the Red Devils’ first team since arriving at the club from Monaco in a big-money deal back in September.

Martial announced himself to the United faithful with a stunning goal against Liverpool on his debut but has not scored for the Red Devils since the 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow more than a month ago.

Former United midfielder Scholes does not believe that Martial is a goal-scoring centre-forward and feels that the Red Devils should think about bolstering their attacking options in the January transfer window.

Speaking on BT Sport after Wednesday’s draw, Scholes said: “One thing he [Louis van Gaal] has done well is sort the back-line out. But attacking-wise, they don’t look a threat, they don’t look like they’re going to score goals.

“I think maybe he’s set up his team to be very good defensively because he knows maybe he hasn’t got the quality up front.

“He’s got two young players in Martial and Memphis [Depay]. Martial for me, has still got a lot to prove goal-scoring wise.

United return to Premier League action with a trip to leaders Leicester City on Saturday evening and head into the game knowing that a win would move them top of the top-flight table.
