Wayne Rooney has congratulated Jesse Lingard on his first Manchester United goal after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over West Brom at Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old scored United’s first Premier League goal in three games after he broke the deadlock in the 52nd-minute against West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal’s side, who had played out goalless draws with Manchester City and Crystal Palace ahead of Saturday’s clash, sealed three points on the stroke of full-time.

Juan Mata converted from the penalty spot after West Brom defender Gareth McAuley had brought down 19-year-old Anthony Martial in the Baggies penalty area.

And United captain Rooney, who was replaced in the second half, dedicated an Instagram post to Lingard after his first-ever United goal.

Rooney wrote on his Instagram page: “Good win today and great to see @jesselingard35_ get his first @premierleague goal”

The 20-time English champions moved to within a point of pace-setters Manchester City and Arsenal thanks to their comfortable win.
