Piers Morgan has claimed that Wayne Rooney’s quality was never in doubt after the striker ended Manchester United’s goal drought by scoring the winner against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night.

The England international has come in for heavy criticism this season for his patchy form in front of goal, with the 30-year-old having netted just two Premier League goals in 10 games.

United endured three consecutive goalless draws before Tuesday’s win, when Rooney headed home in the 79th minute to net the Red Devils’ first goal in 404 minutes of football.

Celebrity fan and Arsenal shareholder Morgan claims that Rooney’s quality was never in question after he proved the hero against the Russian outfit at Old Trafford.

United now turn their attentions back to the Premier League and their home clash with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils head into that game in fourth place in the table and four points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.
