Rio Ferdinand has reassured concerned Manchester United supporters that Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial will develop into more consistent players.

The summer signings were unable to make a breakthrough in United’s goalless draw with Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Martial will get some chances but not the chance to play well in my opinion because the system does not play to a lone striker’s strengths

Martial hasn’t scored since 21 October after the France international netted United’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow in the Champions League.

Dutch forward Memphis ended a seven-game goal drought with the opener in a 2-1 win at Watford last weekend but disappointed against former club PSV.

However, Ferdinand pointed out that United legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney lacked consistency at the start of their Old Trafford careers.

“Anthony Martial and Memphis were disappointing against PSV Eindhoven but they are young players and young players lack consistency,” Ferdinand told The Sun.

“Believe me, at the start both Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo did too.

“But this is not a system set up to get the very best out of a No 9.

“Martial will get some chances but not the chance to play well in my opinion because the system does not play to a lone striker’s strengths.”

Louis van Gaal’s side face Premier League leaders Leicester City at King Power Stadium in Saturday’s late kick-off.
