Rio Ferdinand urges Louis van Gaal to stick with Man United star
Rio Ferdinand issues his backing for Man United forward Memphis Depay
Rio Ferdinand has urged Louis van Gaal to keep Memphis Depay in his Manchester United line-up.
The Netherlands international started his first Premier League game since 4 October on Saturday afternoon as Memphis scored United’s first goal in a 2-1 win at Watford.
He got a nice goal at the weekend and he’ll be looking to build on that now I’m sure
The £25m summer signing had fallen out-of-favour under his compatriot in recent months after a slow start to his United career following his move from PSV.
And Ferdinand, who moved to Queens Park Rangers from Old Trafford in 2013, explained why Van Gaal must start Memphis against his former club PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
“When players start hitting a bit of form, you’ve got to keep them in the team, I think Memphis has had a sticky start to his Manchester United career,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“In the qualifiers he done well, he was a big part as to why they qualified for the Champions League, but in the Premier League he’s not really set the world alight yet, he got a nice goal at the weekend and he’ll be looking to build on that now I’m sure.”
For Memphis, the match is a reunion with the club he left in the summer.
The Dutch winger made 90 league appearances for PSV, scoring 39 goals, after coming through their youth ranks.
The £25m summer signing scored against his former club in United’s 2-1 loss to PSV on matchday one.
