Steven Gerrard runs rule over Liverpool’s ‘demanding’ Jurgen Klopp
Steven Gerrard says Jurgen Klopp demands a lot from Liverpool players despite the friendship and hugs
Steven Gerrard says Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is demanding a lot from his players during training sessions at Melwood.
The former Reds skipper went along to his former club to meet the new manager earlier this week before the 35-year-old midfielder watched one of Klopp’s training sessions.
The work at Melwood paid dividends on the pitch as Liverpool secured back-to-back wins thanks to a 2-1 victory over Ligue 1 side Bordeaux in the Europa League on Thursday night.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard discussed the changes that Klopp has made to the Reds’s style of play since taking over the reins at the 18-time English champions.
“With the ball, they’re getting it forward a lot quicker,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“They’re playing with pace. Defensively, they look a little more organised. I watched the training session when I went to meet him and it’s that tempo when they press and how aggressive he wants it to be.
“Although he is giving his players hugs and showing his friendships, he is very demanding in the session.”
Liverpool were 4-1 winners against Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend after Eliaquim Mangala’s own goal and strikes from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Martin Skrtel.
