Stoke defender: Why Chelsea star Diego Costa isn’t that nasty
Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross says he encountered nastier players in the Championship than Diego Costa
Ryan Shawcross says he has encountered nastier players than Chelsea striker Diego Costa in the Championship.
The Stoke City defender clashed with the controversial Spain international during the Potters’s 1-0 victory over the defending Premier League champions on Saturday.
Once you’ve got Costa concentrating on you rather than the game you’ve won the battle
The 27-year-old has failed to score in his last six games as Shawcross managed to keep Costa quiet at Britannia Stadium despite the striker’s best attempts at provoking a reaction from the Stoke man.
But the one-time England international insisted that he was fazed by Costa’s antics after the forward appeared to suggest Shawcross had an odour problem.
“I played in the Championship and there’s a lot nastier people in the Championship and tougher people,” Shawcross is quoted as saying by London Evening Standard.
“Once you’ve got Costa concentrating on you rather than the game you’ve won the battle. I was pleased he was concentrating on me and just delighted to keep him quiet because he’s a fantastic player.”
Costa has scored two goals and has made one assist in 10 Premier League games for the defending champions this season.
The Blues forward moved to the west London side in a £32m deal from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid in 2014.
Chelsea are in 16th place in the Premier League table ahead of the visit of Norwich City on 21 November.
