Terry Butcher runs rule over rivalry between Liverpool and Tottenham stars
Terry Butcher says there is great competition for England right-back spot between Nathaniel Clyne and Kyle Walker
Terry Butcher says there is a great competition for the England right-back spot between Nathaniel Clyne and Kyle Walker.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender started England’s 2-0 defeat by Spain in Friday night’s friendly in Alicante.
Clyne has been a regular in the right full-back position during Walker’s spell on the sidelines over the past 12 months.
Former England skipper Butcher was impressed with Walker’s performance against the reigning European champions.
Butcher told Sky Sports: “Walker was steady. He got forward a bit more in the second half. He’s got great competition for that right-back spot with Nathaniel Clyne but I thought he equipped himself alright.”
Clyne moved to Liverpool in an £11.5m deal from Southampton in the summer transfer window amid reported interest from Manchester United.
Walker has been a mainstay of Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side this season and the England defender has helped Spurs piece together a 11-game unbeaten run.
The Tottenham full-back has made 12 appearances in the Premier League this season, missing just eight minutes of top-flight action this term.
Clyne, meanwhile, hasn’t missed a minute of top-flight action for his new employers Liverpool.
