Van Gaal sends message to Man United fans over Martial substitution
Louis van Gaal insists that his decision to replace Anthony Martial in the 66th minute was the right one
Louis van Gaal insisted that Manchester United fans would “not be disappointed” by his decision to substitute Anthony Martial during Tuesday’s 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow.
The 19-year-old France international was brought off in the 66th minute at Old Trafford and was replaced by Marouane Fellaini to a chorus of jeers from the home fans as they expressed their discontent over the decision.
However, although Van Gaal acknowledged the reception his decision received, he insisted that it was the right one.
Asked about the fans’ reaction, Van Gaal told a news conference after the game: “Of course I heard that.
“That is the opinion of the fans, afterwards they shall not be disappointed with the decision of the manager.”
After a goalless first half, Wayne Rooney in the 79th minute as United took a big step towards qualifying for the knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition.
The win left United top of their group on seven points and one point ahead of PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg heading into the final two games.
Van Gaal’s men now turn their attentions back to the Premier League and their home clash with West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.
