Louis van Gaal had plenty to say about Chris Smalling last night.

The Manchester United centre-half played a vital role in the Red Devils’s clean sheet after he produced a brilliant block to deny Seydou Doumbia in the second half at Old Trafford.

Smalling’s goal-line clearance gave the hosts a springboard to go on and secure three points courtesy of Wayne Rooney’s headed winner with 11 minutes remaining.

However, after some rare excitement at the Theatre of Dreams in the second half, Van Gaal couldn’t remember Smalling’s first name as the United manager called the England man, ‘Michael’.

“David de Gea saved us and after that Michael Smalling has saved us,” said Van Gaal.

Of course, it isn’t the first time the United boss has made the slip-up after he referred to Smalling as “Mike” during pre-season.

Speaking at his post-match media conference on Tuesday night, Van Gaal did reserve special praise for the England centre-half following his goal-line heroics to save David De Gea and his United team-mates.

“It was the only attack of CSKA Moscow and that was when a player of Manchester United stepped in the wrong way,” Van Gaal added.

“David De Gea has saved us and then Smalling has saved us, but that is also football – that you are running everything out of your body to prevent goals and it is fantastic to see that Smalling is doing that.”
