Steven Gerrard issues Liverpool with Chelsea warning
Steven Gerrard says Liverpool can't afford to be complacent in top-four race despite Chelsea's slump
Steven Gerrard has warned Liverpool not to underestimate Chelsea in the race for a top-four finish this season.
The Reds are eight points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side after the Merseyside outfit beat Swansea City 1-0 following Chelsea’s goalless stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last weekend.
Liverpool are in sixth place and just six points adrift of Premier League following back-to-back wins against City and Swansea in the top flight.
However, former Liverpool skipper Gerrard believes the Reds can’t afford to be complacent in the race for a top-four finish, refusing to discount Chelsea from the Champions League equation.
“It is important from Liverpool’s point of view that they keep winning and keep Chelsea as far away as possible because you can never write them off,” Gerrard told RTE Radio.
Liverpool were 3-1 winners against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this season thanks to goals from Philippe Coutinho and Christian Benteke.
The Reds have scored 13 times in their last four games in all competitions, including Wednesday night’s stunning 6-1 victory over Southampton in the League Cup quarter-final at St Mary’s.
