Arsenal legend Thierry Henry reacts to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea sacking
Thierry Henry blames the Chelsea players for getting Jose Mourinho sacked
Thierry Henry has criticised the Chelsea players after Jose Mourinho was sacked on Thursday evening.
The Blues suffered their ninth Premier League loss of the season after a 2-1 defeat by Leicester City at King Power Stadium.
It’s a sad day if you are a Chelsea fan
Mourinho was heavily critical of his Chelsea players following Monday night’s defeat, and the 52-year-old has left Stamford Bridge after a two-and-a-half year reign in west London.
And speaking to Sky Sports News HQ after Chelsea confirmed Mourinho’s departure, former Arsenal striker Henry was quick to point the finger at the manager’s under-performing squad.
Henry said: “They needed a change to spark a reaction, but they have sacked the best manager in their history and the best manager in the game.
“The players should be held accountable. You cannot sack all the players so sack the manager – whether [it is] right or wrong.
“What happened in some of the games is not all down to Mourinho. There was a lack of desire and commitment.
“I kept saying Chelsea will turn it around but they didn’t. I don’t know if he would have turned it around but you have to be careful what you wish for.
“It’s a sad day if you are a Chelsea fan. The media are losing a great character and hopefully he can bounce back.”
Chelsea are in 16th place in the Premier League table and a point above the relegation zone following a 2-1 loss at Leicester on Monday night.
The Blues have just 15 points after 16 Premier League games and host fellow strugglers Sunderland in west London on Saturday afternoon.
Mourinho guided Chelsea to their fourth Premier League crown and the League Cup last season following his return to the club in June 2013.
