Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger urged to spend in January
Pat Nevin says Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may not have a better chance to win fourth Premier League title
Arsene Wenger must spend in the January transfer window to bolster Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League title, according to Pat Nevin.
The Gunners are favourites to win their first top-flight crown since 2004 after the north London side eased to a 2-1 victory over rivals Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
He can’t take any chances. The money is there
Arsenal are two points behind surprise Premier League leaders Leicester City ahead of their clash against Southampton at St Mary’s in their next game on Saturday night.
The Gunners have been linked with Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama and Colombia international James Rodriguez ahead of the January transfer window.
And former Chelsea midfielder Nevin explained why Wenger simply can’t afford to gamble on Arsenal’s title prospect and must strengthen his Gunners squad next month.
“He may be tempted to splash a few quid in January. He hasn’t done it hugely before,” Nevin told Newstalk’s Off The Ball podcast.
“But now, he must be thinking that he can’t blow it again and do the morale thing and not spend as much as everyone else. He can’t take any chances. The money is there and the money will be there in bucketfuls next year.
“Man United might have another manager, Chelsea will be back up and Man City will be stronger.”
Leicester make the trip to Liverpool in their next Premier League game on Boxing Day before the Foxes host Manchester City at King Power Stadium on 29 December.
