Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger comments on John Stones reports
Arsene Wenger pours cold water on reports linking Arsenal with a January transfer swoop for John Stones
Arsene Wenger has insisted that Arsenal are not planning a January transfer swoop for Everton defender John Stones.
Reports in the British media this week have claimed that the Gunners are considering a big-money bid for the Toffees centre-half as the mid-season transfer window looms large.
However, the Arsenal boss emphatically quashed those suggestions at a news conference at Arsenal’s training ground on Friday morning, insisting that he is only focused on the visit of Sunderland on Saturday.
Asked if he had asked the Arsenal board to line up a bid for Stones in January, Wenger replied: “No, I ask my players to focus on tomorrow’s game.
“I didn’t ask anything to the board. Anyway, it’s not the board who buys the players.
“I’m not after John Stones if that’s what you want to know. We are focused on tomorrow’s game.”
Chelsea were heavily linked with a bid to sign the 21-year-old Stones from Everton in the summer but a move to Stamford Bridge failed to materialise for the defender.
Arsenal, who are fourth in the table, head into Saturday’s clash with Sunderland looking to return to winning ways after their 1-1 draw at Norwich City last weekend.
