Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger urged to sign Atletico Madrid defender
Eamon Dunphy says Atletico Madrid centre-half Diego Godin would be the perfect signing for Arsenal
Diego Godin would be a world-class signing capable of improving Arsenal’s defence in January, according to Eamon Dunphy.
The Gunners booked their place in the Champions League knockout-stage draw after an impressive 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in Greece on Wednesday night.
They need a presence and a leader
France international Laurent Koscielny partnered World Cup winner Per Mertesacker at centre-half for the crucial Champions League group-stage clash.
However, former Manchester United midfielder Dunphy isn’t convinced by the towering Germany defender, or Wenger’s January signing in 2014, Gabriel Paulista.
The retired Republic of Ireland international described Godin as the best centre-half in world football, urging Wenger to recruit the Uruguayan next month.
Dunphy told RTE Sport: “Godin of Atletico. He is the best centre-half in the world. If Arsenal bought him, he would make a huge difference. They need a presence and a leader. I don’t think Mertesacker has those qualities.”
The 29-year-old centre-half has scored one goal and has made two assists in 20 games in La Liga and the Champions League this season.
Godin has scored 19 times in 231 appearances in all competitions for Los Rojiblancos.
The Uruguay international moved to Atletico from La Liga rivals Villarreal in 2007.
