Arsenal transfers: Wenger needs dominant midfielder, says Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand says Arsenal need to sign a midfielder in the mould of Patrick Vieira
Rio Ferdinand says Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs to sign a dominant midfielder in the mould of Patrick Vieira.
The north London side booked their place in the Champions League knockout-stage draw thanks to a stunning 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in Greece on Wednesday night.
They need a dominant central midfielder
Wenger is contending with an injury crisis at The Emirates following injury to midfielders Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere.
While Ferdinand believes Wenger needs some midfield cover in the January transfer window, the former United defender insists the Arsenal boss still needs to replace club legend Vieira.
“I think they need some more cover in the central defensive area,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“They need a dominant central midfielder. It’s not been the same since [Patrick] Vieira left.”
Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups during a decorated eight-year career at the north London club.
Wenger only signed one player in the summer transfer window after he snapped up Petr Cech in a £12m deal from defending champions Chelsea.
Arsenal were the only club in one of Europe’s major leagues not to sign an outfield player in the summer.
