Arsene Wenger: Why Arsenal can beat Barcelona
Arsene Wenger assesses Arsenal's Champions League hopes after they were drawn with Barcelona in the last 16
Arsene Wenger has claimed that Arsenal have a “good chance” of knocking out Barcelona to reach the Champions League quarter-finals in the new year.
The Gunners were pitted against the holders in Monday’s draw after the north London side secured their spot in the last 16 with a dramatic 3-0 win at Olympiacos last week.
Arsenal face a tough task against the La Liga champions but Wenger feels that his side can draw plenty of positives from their recent games, especially their 2-0 win over Bayern Munich in the group stage earlier this season.
Asked for his take on the draw, Wenger told a news conference on Thursday morning: “We play against a team who are the holders of the trophy and is the best team in Europe at the moment. But I think we have a chance to knock them out.
“We have to be inspired by the result we made against Bayern at home. With the same kind of difficulty, do we achieve the same result?
“I think we have a good chance to go through. It will be difficult but very exciting as well.”
Arsenal are currently preparing for their Premier League showdown with title rivals Manchester City at Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
The Gunners, who beat Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park last weekend, head into the game in second place in the table and two points behind surprise leaders Leicester City.
