Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer discusses reports linking Pep Guardiola with Man United
Franz Beckenbauer has admitted that Pep Guardiola could be interested in taking over Manchester United.
The Bayern Munich manager has been touted as a potential successor for Louis van Gaal over the past couple of weeks after a disappointing run of results for the 20-time English champions.
The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night following a 3-2 loss to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in Germany in their final group-stage game.
Bayern honorary president Beckenbauer addressed speculation suggesting that two-time Champions League winner Guardiola could take over the reins from Van Gaal at Old Trafford.
“Pep [Guardiola] is interesting for every top club in the world,” Beckenbauer told Merkur newspaper.
“That’s just normal. He can pick his club and, in terms of popularity, Manchester United might be the number one worldwide.”
Guardiola has also been linked with Chelsea and Manchester City over the past number of years.
The Red Devils are in fourth place in the Premier League table and three points behind surprise leaders Leicester City.
The United side played out a goalless draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford last weekend.
