Bournemouth 2 Man United 1: Player ratings as Juan Mata struggles

Player ratings as Bournemouth beat Manchester United 2-1 thanks to Joshua King's winner

Bournemouth

Artur Boruc The former Celtic shot-stopper made two brilliant saves to deny Fellaini and Carrick minutes after the home side’s opener. The Bournemouth goalkeeper played a key part in his side’s famous victory. 8/10

Simon Francis He marshalled Martial well but he couldn’t get a tackle in on Fellaini for United’s equaliser. His mazy run from his own half led to the corner from which King put Bournemouth back in front. 8

Steve Cook Cook was unable to block Fellaini’s equaliser on the goal-line. Otherwise, an assured performance from the Bournemouth centre-half. 7

Charlie Daniels He did well against United’s inexperienced right-side of Varela and Lingard before the Englishman was replaced by Pereira. 7

Adam Smith The Bournemouth right-back had to be alert against lively Memphis. 7

Dan Gosling Gosling kept De Gea preoccupied as Stanislas’s corner floated over the United goalkeeper. The former Newcastle United man worked hard. 7

Andrew Surman The South African impressed with his passing. A strong performance from the Cherries midfielder. 7

Harry Arter The Republic of Ireland international struggled to get on the ball but he did battle well against Fellaini and Carrick. The victory is rich reward for his hard work to recover from injury. The Bournemouth team wore black armbands for the game after he and his partner lost their child at birth this week. 7

Joshua King The former United youth graduate showed endeavour and was a willing runner. The Cherries striker justified his place ahead of Murray with a fine 53rd-minute strike. He was forced off with an injury moments later. 8

Junior Stanislas (man of the match) He broke the deadlock in the second minute with an inswinging corner. Almost undid his good work with a sloppy pass which was intercepted by Martial. He ran the ball into De Gea’s hands when through on goal. 9

Matt Ritchie The Scotland international didn’t get too many opportunities to test inexperienced Borthwick-Jackson. The midfielder had a half chance before the break but his effort was scooped up by De Gea. His cunning corner led to King’s goal. 8

Manchester United

David De Gea The United goalkeeper could only wave Stanislas’s opener into the net. The shot stopper showed bravery to save at goal-scorer’s feet in 20th minute. 6

Guillermo Valera The Uruguay international looked lively at right-back. He got forward to support Lingard. 7

Paddy McNair He was left in Stanislas’s wake but De Gea spared his team-mate’s blushes. He looked cumbersome at times. He left the pitch injured in added time. 5

Daley Blind He managed to put King off his strike after Stanilas whipped in a cross for the Bournemouth forward. An adept performance but surely not a long-term solution at centre-half. 5

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson The United debutant started well at an intimidating Vitality Stadium. He can be satisfied with his first game for the 20-time English champions. 7

Jesse Lingard The 22-year-old was the latest United player to succumb to injury. 5

Maroaune Fellaini The towering Belgian looked set to equalise but Boruc produced a brilliant save. However, he did restore parity shortly after as he showed great persistence to poke a finish into the net. 8

Michael Carrick The 33-year-old was denied by Boruc from close range. His passing caused Bournemouth problems, particularly in the first half. 7

Juan Mata The most-expensive player on the pitch struggled to have an impact. 5

Memphis Depay The Dutch winger looked most-likely to create something in the first half with his positive runs. His superb chest control and shot led to Fellaini’s goal. 7

Anthony Martial The £36m striker spurned a fantastic chance to equalise after he dragged his finish wide of Boruc’s goal. The 20-year-old couldn’t be faulted for effort – he worked tirelessly. 6

Substitutes

Andreas Pereira The Brazilian was a first-half substitute. He was booked for a dangerous tackle. 6
