Charlie Nicholas makes claim about Arsenal v Man City
Charlie Nicholas talks up the importance of Arsenal's showdown with Manchester City on Monday night
Charlie Nicholas believes that Monday night’s Premier League showdown between Arsenal and Manchester City is a make or break game for the Gunners.
Arsene Wenger’s men head into the game on the back of their 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon and following their progression to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Many have tipped the north London side to mount a genuine challenge for the Premier League title this season, with the Gunners having already recorded victories over the likes of Manchester United at The Emirates this term.
And former Arsenal star Nicholas has talked up the importance of Monday night’s clash at Emirates Stadium, with City currently trailing the Gunners by a single point after 16 games.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday, Nicholas said: “It’s a statement-making night for Arsenal.
“They tend to let themselves down when they get a little opportunity. The nice twist that I saw last weekend at Villa was how well they controlled the game to get to the top of the table – yes, for only 24 hours – but it was a statement of intent to see them control the match.
“They’re getting through this period with the injured players out, when everybody thought they might struggle.
“But time and time again, we get to these situations with Arsenal and the big players just don’t turn up.”
He added: “For me, Monday night is far more important for Arsenal than it is for Manchester City.
“It’s a statement of intent to say ‘if we beat Man City, we are the real deal this season’ – and that’s important.”
Arsenal and City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium in the same fixture last season. City were 2-1 winners over Swansea in the top flight last weekend.
