Charlie Nicholas: This Chelsea star can’t play in defensive-midfield role
Charlie Nicholas questions why Jose Mourinho insists on playing Cesc Fabregas in a deep-lying midfield role
Jose Mourinho must stop playing Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas in a deep-lying midfield role, according to Charlie Nicholas.
The Spain international has struggled to perform in the Blues side this season after an alarming drop in form following the west London side’s latest Premier League success.
He’s not got the pace about him but he has speed of mind to open things up
Fabregas has made two assists in 15 Premier League games last season after the 28-year-old midfielder finished the division’s top assist-maker with 20 in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.
Former Arsenal playmaker Nicholas questioned why Chelsea manager Mourinho continues to persist with Fabregas in a defensive-midfield role in his Blues side.
“I don’t know why Jose Mourinho wants to keep playing Cesc Fabregas in a deeper role,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“His influence has to be creative, not work ethic. He’s not got the pace about him but he has speed of mind to open things up, just as he did last season with his assists for Diego Costa and Eden Hazard.”
The Chelsea playmaker could line up against Portuguese side Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Fabregas has won the Premier League and the League Cup since his £27m move to Chelsea from Barcelona in 2014.
The Spanish midfielder scored five times in 47 games in all competitions for Mourinho’s men in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
