Charlie Nicholas: Why Petr Cech will inspire Arsenal to Olympiacos win
Former Arsenal star Charie Nicholas explains why he is confident the Gunners will beat Olympiacos
Charlie Nicholas has backed Petr Cech to inspire Arsenal to victory over Olympiacos on Wednesday night.
The Gunners need to beak the Greek side in Athens in their final Champions League group stage to secure their place in the knockout stage.
The north London side warmed up for their vital European clash with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland at Emirates Stadium at the weekend.
Former Arsenal playmaker Nicholas is confident Arsene Wenger’s side will get the job done against Olympiacos on Wednesday night.
“Arsenal can do it, there’s no doubt about that, but I’m not totally convinced that they will because the injury situation is a dramatic one,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“For too many years now they’ve needed the big performances and they get them but somehow fall short. I mean, how can you beat Bayern Munich and still be in this situation?
“Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back and Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud scoring goals gives me hope. I see Arsenal scoring their two goals but I have a horrible feeling that they’ll get into a good position and then concede and go out.
“I really hope that I’m wrong and that this is where Petr Cech, who has been brilliant, pays back his transfer fee and more.”
Arsenal lost their opening two Champions League group-stage games against Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos before a much-needed win against Bayern Munich.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side were emphatic 5-1 winners against the Gunners before Wenger’s men were 3-0 winners against Zagreb at The Emirates last time out in the Champions League.
The Gunners are in second place in the Premier League and a point behind surprise leaders Leicester City.
