Charlie Nicholas: Why Southampton will end Liverpool’s resurgence under Jurgen Klopp
Charlie Nicholas is backing Southampton to beat Liverpool 3-1
Charlie Nicholas believes Southampton will end Liverpool’s recent resurgence under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds secured their first Premier League win at Anfield since the 48-year-old took over the reins from Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers.
Koeman will say ‘we’re at home, we’ll play our game’ and I think they’ll win this one
Liverpool have lost just one of their opening 11 games under the former Borussia Dortmund manager – a surprise home defeat by Crystal Palace.
The Merseyside outfit have recorded away victories at defending Premier League champions Chelsea and title favourites Manchester City in recent weeks.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas is tipping Southampton to recover from back-to-back losses and beat Liverpool in the League Cup quarter-final at St Mary’s on Wednesday night.
Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Well this one really is the pick of the draw. Southampton have been a bit disappointing, yes, but they didn’t play badly at Manchester City according to Merse.
“They missed Graziano Pelle and will have him back against Liverpool. Ronald Koeman will be another one thinking why can’t we have a go at winning this? They may not have the depth of some teams but they have a very good side.
“Then we have the resurgence under Jurgen Klopp and everyone going crazy because they’re up to sixth in the Premier League. It was another grind at home against Swansea and they’ll probably prefer being able to play on the counter-attack again here.
“Koeman will say ‘we’re at home, we’ll play our game’ and I think they’ll win this one.”
Liverpool are in sixth place in the Premier League table and six points behind joint leaders City and Leicester City ahead of next Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United.
The Saints, meanwhile, are three points behind Liverpool in tenth place.
