Three strikers Chelsea could sign in the January transfer window
Iqbal Johal takes a look at three possible attacking transfer targets for Chelsea in the forthcoming January window
Despite recently turning 34, Zlatan Ibrahimovic still keeps proving himself to be one of the leading strikers in world football. He has scored 17 times in 23 appearances this season, including six crucial goals for Sweden which helped them qualify for Euro 2016. With 117 goals in 144 PSG outings since joining in 2012, it seems as the Swede has never left his prime. And with his contract up in the summer, rumours of a move to England, particularly Chelsea, have become even stronger with a cut-price deal potentially to be done in January, or worse case scenario a free transfer at the end of the season. Chelsea have certainly struggled for league goals this season with only three players scoring more than once, and last season’s hit-man Diego Costa, netting just three times. With Costa and Jose Mourinho’s relationship apparently under increasing strain and Chelsea’s lack of goals this season, the need for another striker is crucial in January and there are not too many better options than Ibrahimovic.
Closer to home, the Blues have been constantly linked with Premier League record breaker Jamie Vardy. The 28-year-old beat Ruud Van Nistlerooy’s Premier League record for scoring in consecutive matches, as he netted for the 11th time in a row, against Manchester United. With 14 goals already to his name, there is no better in-form striker in the league than Vardy, who could be the answer Chelsea are looking for. After first bursting onto the scene last season during Leicester’s 5-3 victory over Manchester United, Vardy has gone on to win four England caps and many admirers across Europe. Prolific at Non-League, Vardy has carried on that form since signing for Leicester in 2012, scoring 39 in 111 League appearances that has helped the Foxes enjoy a remarkable start to the season. The Leicester star is blessed with lightening pace, never say die work-rate and an ever improving eye for goal, who would be surely be a fantastic option in January for Chelsea to turn their season around.
The French forward was in sparkling form for Athletico Madrid last season, scoring 22 La Liga goals, with only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo netting more. The 24-year-old French international is rumoured to be a £40m target for Mourinho in January, with this figure unlikely to put off Roman Abramovich and his seemingly endless pit of money. A graduate of Real Sociedad’s youth system, he went on to score over 50 times for the Spanish side in 201 appearances, which drew the attention of Atletico, who snapped him up for a reported £25m in 2014. Griezmann is a versatile forward that can play as a centre-forward or anywhere across and front three, with extreme pace, excellent technical ability and a natural eye for goal. With nearly 300 professional appearances to his name at the tender age of 24, the experience also adds to his value, making him the all-round package Chelsea have been desperately missing this season.
