Danny Higginbotham questions Louis van Gaal's tactics after Man United's 3-2 loss to Wolfsburg
Danny Higginbotham has questioned Louis van Gaal’s tactics after Manchester United’s 3-2 defeat by Wolfsburg.
The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League after a dramatic loss in Germany condemned Van Gaal’s side to the Europa League.
It’s the naivety of youth and it led to so many opportunities
Van Gaal handed left-back Guillermo Varela his first United start in their crucial Champions League game, whilst Jesse Lingard started in front of the Uruguayan in midfield.
However, the United youngsters struggled to cope with Wolfsburg duo Julian Draxler and Andre Schurrle throughout the Champions League clash.
And former Red Devil Higginbotham admitted that he was bemused by Van Gaal’s decision to start Lingard and Varela in a vital European game for the Red Devils.
Higginbotham told Sky Sports: “I didn’t understand the Varela/Lingard situation. Wolfsburg are very, very strong down the left hand side.
“They play [Ricardo] Rodriguez who had to go off with an injury and then you’ve got [Julian] Draxler and [Andre] Schurrle and what they did from the first minute was target down that side.
“What Varela was doing more often than not was playing really narrow. It’s the naivety of youth and it led to so many opportunities.”
The Red Devils gave their last-16 prospects a boost after Anthony Martial broke the deadlock in the 10th minute after he scored his first goal since October.
However, Wolfsburg scored either side of half-time to ease into a lead and leave United on the brink of an exit from Europe’s premier competition.
Schweinsteiger was replaced in the 70th minute before Josuha Guilavogui’s own goal gave the Red Devils late hope, but Naldo scored his second of the night to condemn Louis van Gaal’s to the Europa League.
