David Moyes: Why Man United’s Wayne Rooney will become midfielder

David Moyes believes Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will drop into a deeper midfield role in the future

David Moyes has tipped Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney to transform into a midfielder in the latter years of his career.

The Red Devils striker has struggled to find any consistent form under Louis van Gaal this season after a disappointing return of two goals in 15 Premier League games.

At the moment he’s still such a good goal scorer you don’t want to give that up just yet

Rooney, who moved to United from Everton in a £25.6m deal in 2004, has been heavily criticised in recent months for a series of subdued performances.

And Moyes, who managed Rooney at Everton and United, reckons the England skipper has a couple more seasons as a striker before tipping the 30-year-old to play in a midfield role.

“He’s had a long career, he’s been playing since he’s 16, he’s had immense pressure on him since he was a young boy you talk about the media and you think of the stuff that has been on Wayne all of his career and he has to keep playing and scoring and playing well,” Moyes said speaking on The Clare Balding Show.

“I think he’s having a tough time just now, but I think he’ll come through it again, I think he’ll find himself again, I think there’s plenty more life in him. Wayne can play in any position.

“He was great in goals – as a 16 year old boy he would be diving about in front of the goals – he was mad at that time, but you look at the way he has matured, he is England captain, Manchester United captain.

“I think he’ll go on to be a midfield player, he’ll play again, but at the moment he’s still such a good goal scorer you don’t want to give that up just yet.”

Rooney has netted four times in 22 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
