Dietmar Hamann: Arsenal need to appreciate Olivier Giroud more
Dietmar Hamann says Olivier Giroud doesn't get the praise that he deserves
Dietmar Hamann says Olivier Giroud doesn’t get enough praise after the striker’s hat-trick booked Arsenal’s spot in the Champions League last 16.
The France international started up front in Greece and he broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a bullet header before Giroud doubled Arsenal’s lead four minutes after half-time with a close-range finish.
The 29-year-old striker completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot with 23 minutes remaining to wrap up Arsenal’s place in the Champions League knockout-stage draw.
Giroud has scored 15 goals for club and country this season after having reclaimed his place in Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up following injury to Theo Walcott.
And former Liverpool midfielder Hamann believes Giroud is the ideal option for Wenger when Arsenal are confronted with opponents who are willing to sit back.
“He isn’t appreciated for what he does for the team,” Hamann told RTE Sport.
“Giroud’s problem when he does come up against a top team away from home, he isn’t the player you want in the team. You need Theo Walcott.
“But when they play against a team sitting back, Giroud is a very capable player.”
Giroud has scored seven times in his last nine games in all competitions for the north London side.
