Dietmar Hamann: Man United have Premier League’s best centre-half partnership

Dietmar Hamann believes Daley Blind and Chris Smalling are a better combination than Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker

Dietmar Hamann has claimed that Manchester United have the Premier League’s best centre-half partnership.

Arsenal duo Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesakcer produced a mature performance in the north London side’s 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in Greece on Wednesday night.

Daley Blind and Chris Smalling, meanwhile, had a night to forget in Germany after Wolfsburg exposed United’s frailties in a 3-2 victory over Louis van Gaal’s men to eliminate the Premier League side from the Champions League.

The United centre-halves have impressed in the Premier League this season, though, helping David De Gea to keep six clean sheets in 15 top-flight games so far.

And controversially, Hamann named Blind and Smalling as the division’s best centre-half pairing, despite their relative inexperience together in comparison to Koscielny and Mertesacker.

Hamann told RTE Sport: “I think it’s one of the best partnerships in the league. The best is Blind and Smalling. But after that, Koscielny and Mertesacker have done fantastically well over the past couple of years.”

United have only shipped 10 goals in 15 Premier League games this term.
