Dietmar Hamann reacts to Liverpool’s 2-0 loss at Newcastle
Dietmar Hamann gives his post-match take after Liverpool lost 2-0 to Newcastle United on Sunday
Diermar Hamann insisted that Newcastle United were worthy winners after the Magpies secured a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice for Steve McClaren’s men as they earned their third win of the season to move up to 18th place in the table.
The Dutchman gave the Magpies the lead in the 69th minute when his shot was deflected off Martin Skrtel’s knee and into the back of the net.
And the Dutchman added a second with a composed flicked finish in the 90th minute to wrap up the victory.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, former Liverpool midfielder Hamann said: “A tame Lovren header [in the 85th minute] was the first shot Rob Elliot had to save.
“Going forward they were a lot better but still at times too hasty and not composed enough.
“They turned it into a scrappy game, which played into Newcastle’s hands. They [Newcastle] took their chances well. In the end I think they deserved to win.”
He continued: “People did get carried away. Yes, they had a few good results, but they had quite a few very easy games where they came out on top or drew when they didn’t play well.
“Today showed what they are lacking. Without Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge for large parts, they struggled to find chances and looked, for the most part, very ordinary.
“But regardless of who is on the pitch, they have to improve their retention of the ball. Today they were very uncomposed and lost many easy balls.”
The result left Liverpool in seventh place in the Premier League table and six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United after 15 games of the season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men return to top-flight action with a home clash against West Bromwich Albion next Sunday afternoon.
