Dietmar Hamann: Why Arsenal will be real force this season
Dietmar Hamann runs the rule over Arsenal's prospects for the remainder of the season
Dietmar Hamann believes Arsenal will be a real force in the Premier League and the Champions League this season.
The Gunners booked their place in the last-16 draw after a 3-0 victory over Olympiacos in Greece in a must-win Champions League game.
Arsene Wenger was without key players such as Chile international Alexis Sanchez, defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin and Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla for the Olympiacos clash.
The north London side qualified for the knockout stage despite losing three of their opening four group-stage games, whilst the Gunners are in second place in the Premier League.
However, former Liverpool midfielder Hamann believes Arsenal can push on in the coming months after a huge result in Greece.
“It’s a massive moment [in their season],” Hamann told RTE Sport.
“It gives everybody something to look forward to. It gives everybody a buzz.
“Everyone will want to be in the team when they play the knockout game in February.”
Hamann added: “It’s a big boost for the Premier League, too. They’ve got five or six players who can potentially come back into the starting line-up.
“I think they’ll be a real force – not just in the Premier League but the Champions League as well.”
The Gunners were 3-1 winners against Sunderland at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League at the weekend.
Arsenal make the trip to struggling Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
