Ex-Man United striker: Why Diego Simeone won’t replace Louis van Gaal
La Liga expert Terry Gibson says touted Man United target Diego Simeone is happy at Atletico Madrid
Manchester United should forget about appointing Diego Simeone as their next manager, according to La Liga expert Terry Gibson.
The Atletico Madrid boss has been touted as a potential candidate to replace Van Gaal when the Dutchman’s United contract expires at the end of the 2016/17 season.
Van Gaal’s reign could be cut short before the expiration of his United deal amid growing discontent at Old Trafford following their Champions League exit and a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth over the past eight days.
Simeone has led Los Rojiblancos into the knockout phase of Europe’s premier club competition last week, whilst Atletico are in second place and level on points with leaders Barcelona in La Liga.
However, former United striker Gibson believes the Argentine is happy at Vicente Calderon and doesn’t envisage Simeone replacing Van Gaal in the Old Trafford hot seat.
“I can’t see him anywhere else,” Gibson told Sky Sports. “It’s such a good fit [at Atletico]. He seems to have the power to run everything, to determine which players are brought in and which players are sold.
“He has the power to determine players that he’s bought that he doesn’t deem to be good enough with quite a quick decision to loan them out and the club take a small hit or a big hit on the players they’ve loaned out.”
Simeone managed to end Barcelona and Real Madrid’s stranglehold on La Liga and guide Atletico to top-flight glory in 2014.
Atletico also finished as runners-up in the Champions League after a 4-1 defeat by bitter rivals Real.
